Finance minister Matia Kasaija
Kampala. Finance Minister Matia
Kasaija has said it was wrong for Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) to
forcefully break into the office of now interdicted executive director
Ms Jolly Kamugira Kaguhangire.
Speaking in a telephone interview yesterday Mr Kasaija said that whereas the UIA board had rightly interdicted Ms Kaguhangire it had no business breaking into her office.
“If the office was forcefully broken into, then that is bad,” he said but maintained that Ms Kaguhangire should have left office to give way for the investigations.
Last Friday, the UIA board chairman ordered for a break-in into Ms Kaguhangire’s office after she failed to show up at a scheduled handover of office to acting executive director, Mr Ajer Basil.
Ms Kaguhangire was interdicted last week following a number of allegations against her which, among others, included abuse of office, corruption and intimidation.
However, she vowed not to leave office, arguing that the board sitting that had interdicted her was biased and illegal.
Mr Kasaija also said that the disagreements at UIA had been brought to his attention but had asked the two parties to “sort themselves out”, which culminated into the indictment.
“Give us a chance to investigate you. If the IGG finds you innocent, then its good, but if you are found guilty then you have to face the consequences,” he said.
Mr Emely Kugonza, the UIA board chairman told Journalists during the handover that Ms Kaguhangire had called him on June 28, accepting to hand over at 3pm [on Friday].
“I communicated to all board members but when we got here, she did not show up,” he said.
Efforts to speak to Ms Kaguhangire were futile as she neither picked nor returned our repeated phone calls to her known mobile phone number.
In a board sitting on Tuesday, the UIA board appointed Mr Ajer Basil, the director in charge of Small and Medium Enterprises in acting capacity pending completion of investigations of corruption and abuse of office brought against Ms Kaguhangire.
