THE
government has ordered Tanzania Sisal Board (TSB) to start implementing
its plan of producing 125 c come 2021, or else risk disciplinary
actions.
The
directive was made here yesterday by Deputy Minister for Agriculture,
Livestock and Fisheries, Mr Omary Mgumba, further saying that the
initiative should be put in action as quickly as possible in order to
revive the crop farming in Tanga Region forthwith.
“President Magufuli wants to see that you produce what you (TSB) have planned in agricultural development.
In
your report on the Action Plan, you said TSB will produce 125 tonnes by
2021…for that matter you have to reach the target by the scheduled
period,” he said, pointing out that the board should also provide every
annual report concerning the target.
According to Mr Mgumba plans are underway to ensure TSB meets with big investors to form a strategic plan for the initiative.
In
response, the Acting Chairman of the TSB, Mr Marc Njiu, said since
2003, small scale Sisal farmers have been engaging in the cash crop’s
cultivation including trying to acquire loans, but fail because of
various reasons including lack of title deeds to present to financial
firm.
Commenting
on that, the Deputy Minister hinted that the government was committed
on sustainability of the sisal production in the country particularly in
Tanga Region, saying: “The government has already initiated the process
of assisting small scale farmers by issuing them with farm title
deeds.”
He
further said that the government was aware of the importance of the
cash crop and for a long time, it has been working on challenges facing
it including other crops in their cultivation.
