THE
National Insurance Corporation (NIC) will soon start applying digital
system to collect insurance fees for transit vehicles through the Dar es
Salaam Port, a move expected to boost its income to 10bn/- from the
current 3bn/-.
These are vehicles destined for member
countries of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa
(COMESAExecutive Director of the NIC, Mr Sam Kamanga noted this
yesterday at the 8th workers’ council meeting of the corporation here in
Morogoro.
He stated that the new digital application
is set for launching next month and is intended to address sabotages by
some agents. Some of the port agents have been dishonest, forging some
of the insurance documents, a situation which denies revenues to the NIC
and the government.
He said many transit vehicles through the
ports were seen as insured, but when they reach their destinations in
the COMESA countries, they are found to have fake insurances.
We have conducted research and found out
that several insurance documents were forged, so we look forward to
using the digital system from July,” he stressed.
Under this new application, the company is
upbeat that it will be addressing the loopholes leading to loss of
revenues. Meanwhile, he informed that they also plan to introduce new
insurance product, called agriculture insurance,
noting that currently the experts are
still analysing various issues in order to see the best mode of how it
will be operating from July, this year. The aim of introducing this type
of insurance is to provide opportunity to the farmers to benefit from
insurance through their cooperatives.
Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Dr Kebwe
Stephen Kebwe, who officially opened the meeting, told the NIC to
embrace more creativity in looking for new markets due to increased
competition.
He advised the NIC to ensure that it pays
compensations to its customers timely in order to build trust among
them, and thus make their business grow. He further commended the
corporation for its efforts to adopt digital systems in provision of its
services.
