TANZANIA Breweries Limited (TBL) has partnered with Kilimanjaro Project to plant 100,000 trees on the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in the Siha District, in Commemoration of World Environment Day expected to reach climax next week.
Siha District Commissioner Mr Onesmo Buswelu commended TBL and Kilimanjaro Project noble to reforest Mount Kilimanjaro to combat deforestation and subsequent effects on soil degradation as well as critical changes in local weather patterns and rainfall around Mount Kilimanjaro.
“It is the responsibility of the individuals and whole community to take care of the environment as most parts of the country have experienced tremendous deforestation,” he said yesterday.
TBL Group External Communication Manager Zena Tenga said the company in partnership with The Kilimanjaro Project and other stakeholders including the Ministry of Environment have committed to plant 50 million trees within the next 10 years in the Kilimanjaro Region with the Group’s Kilimanjaro Lager as the champion beer for this initiative.
“Each year millions of trees are cut down in the Kilimanjaro Region and a further 300,000 hectares of land per annum is being deforested in Tanzania for charcoal and firewood demands as well as land usage for agriculture,” she said.
“These statistics are alarming and that is why we have to act now,” she said. Ms Sarah Scott of the Kilimanjaro Project said, “The Kilimanjaro Project is more than just about tree planting, but the vision is to inspire the nation to not only plant trees but to grow them, thus creating a legacy for future generations.
We are excited that Kilimanjaro Lager is the first major brand to commit to support this vision, is a great honour.”
