By ABDALLAH MSUYA in Zanzibar

KOREA International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Zanzibar Ministry of Education and Vocational Training yesterday signed an agreement where the former will release 10 million US dollars to support the latter’s education sector.

Dr Idrissa Muslim Hija, Principal Secretary (PS) for the Ministry of Education and Mr Joonsung Park - KOICAs Director signed and exchanged the documents as other staffs led by the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Mmanga Mjengo Mjawir, witnessed.
The funds for five-year (2018/2022) pact are to support the development of secondary schools including learning environment - expansion of schools, sanitation (water and toilets), and laboratory.
Mr Mjawir thanked KOICA as he warned dishonest executives in his ministry that they risk being fired and prosecuted if they engage in corruption and embezzlement of donor funds.
We are tired of officers in the government who frustrate our development partners by stealing money or deliver shoddy work.
We must fight them, the Deputy Minister said. He said the government has been losing by getting poorly constructed buildings because of poor supervision from dishonest civil servants and consultants.
KOICA promised continued support for Zanzibar’s development, advising stakeholders to respect the agreement so that students learn in a friendly environment.
