Government
must ensure proper functionality of capital markets if it is to guide
and script a country growth trajectory, according to Mr David Ofungi,
the managing director of Dero, a financial technology (FinTech) firm.
Speaking in an interview at the weekend, Mr Ofungi said capital markets are facilitated by four factors including an enabling policy, availability of investment capital, entrepreneurship, and the use of technology to bring about efficiency and building innovative products.
Mr Ofungi was speaking ahead of capital markets conference dubbed Economic Mkutano, which he said is appropriate at a time when headwinds are challenging business convention in the private sector.
The conference, which will largely focus on investment, will also discuss ways through which the country can sustain economic development using the capital markets.
Mr Keith Kalyegira, the Capital Markets Authority chief executive officer, said capital markets offer cheap and alternative capital that is mobilised from investors, who focus on the long term interests of the business.
Organised under the theme Priming ourselves for inclusive growth through the capital markets, the conference is expected to be held on Tuesday, May 15th 2018, at Kampala Serena Hotel in Kampala.
Mr Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, the governor Bank of Uganda will be the chief guest.
