Chai, was the largest buyer of the beverage at the Mombasa auction in
2017—ending multinational Unilever 25-year monopoly at the top.

from Tea Brokers indicate the volume of tea purchased by Global Tea
last year rose 12.6 per cent to 59.89 million kilos, up from 51.6
million kilos registered in 2016.
Unilever, who are
represented at the auction by broker Cargill, came in second with 59.1
million kilos in 2017, a drop from 62.3 million previously. LAB
International came in third at 31.8 million kilos.
“Global
Tea has been growing over the years and their innovation contributed to
the milestone they registered last year,” said Edward Mudibo, the
managing director at the East African Tea Traders Association (EATTA),
which runs the auction.
Mr Mudibo said the firm has ready orders and the fact that they have specific markets gives them an advantage.
Chai Trading, an arm of the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), was at number four having bought 31.4 million kilos.
