PARENTS and guardians of kindergarten and primary school pupils have been urged to cooperate with teachers and school owners in tackling parenting challenges, instead of leaving the task wholly to teachers.
The advice was given over the weekend by
the Head of the Examinations Department at the College of Planning and
Rural Development in Dodoma, Mr Kwahi Dede, during the Fountain Gate
Academy graduation ceremony at Mlimwa C in Dodoma.
Mr Dede said parents and guardians
should focus especially on moulding children into well mannered and
patriotic individuals who would play positive roles in their country in
future. He commended the institution for its impressive academic
performance, citing the recent Standard Seven examinations, in which it
emerged overall winner in Ilala District, in Dar es Salaam.
“The trend shows that you are doing
well; so please, don’t relax. Work hard to ensure that you sustain the
number one slot. Parents and guardians should also play their part by
facilitating their children to get quality education,” he added.
The Fountain Gate Academy Director, Mr
Japhet Makau, urged parents, guardians and education stakeholders to
give as much priority to kindergarten schools as they do to universities
and other higher learning institutions.
Mr Makau noted sadly that many parents
and guardians didn’t consider kindergarten schools as an important
academic area in which to invest for their children. This was an
anomaly, he noted, pointing out that, kindergarten schools were
foundations upon which good primary and secondary schools, as well as
universities could be built.
“Good students you see from different
universities are primarily products of investments made in kindergarten
schools; you can build a very good house but if the foundation is not
solid enough, you would be in trouble; so solid foundations for
kindergarten schools are fundamental for fashioning a bright future for
children who would subsequently become resourceful adults,” Mr Makau
observed.
