The government has placed Airtel Tanzania under the Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) after realising that there was a dirty game played during its acquisition, President John Magufuli has said.
The President announced the decision
Wednesday before laying a foundation stone for the construction of the
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)’s Takwimu House in Dodoma.
He didn’t reveal more details but
insisted that people, including the media fraternity, should avoid using
misleading statistics simply because “by doing so it tarnishes the
image of the country.”
He thanked Canada and other development
partners for accepting that the building be constructed in Dodoma
instead of Dar es Salaam, as it was earlier planned. He assured the
Partners that their support will be used as intended, simply because the
government is not misusing funds.
UN Country Director for Tanzania,
Burundi, Malawi and Somalia, Ms Bella Bird said statistics is important
in the growing economy, adding that universities have an important role
to play in providing the subject to young people.
The event was also attended by Minister
of Finance and Planning Dr Philip Mpango, NBS Director General, Dr
Albina Chuwa and other top government officials.
