THE Kagera Regional Commissioner (RC), Salum Kijuu, has advised Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) beneficiaries to as well initiate some income generating projects in their midst to improve their livelihoods.
He said the beneficiaries should ensure
that the funds they are getting from the government are used to address
poverty in their homesteads by meaningfully engaging in more economic
activities which generate more incomes.
He challenged them to refrain from
engaging in lavish expenditures and instead focus on addressing basic
social needs in their families. Mr Kijuu made the call mid this week
here while visiting some families registered with TASAF III programme in
Bukoba Municipality and Bukoba Rural districts.
“The Fifth Phase government under
President John Magufuli is determined to ensure that majority of
Tanzanians; especially the ones at the grassroots enjoy social services
including health.” “
My appeal to the people who get TASAF
funds is that they should direct the money to improve their lives, by
constructing decent houses and starting viable income generating
projects in their midst,” he added.
While at Kanyagereko and Butahyaibega
wards, Mr Kijuu said he was happy with the efforts being made by some of
the widows who are rearing goats in the areas to supplement their
incomes, adding: “Such efforts should be emulated.”
In another development, he directed
District Commissioners (DCs) and District Executive Directors (DEDs) in
the region, to ensure that unqualified people listed under TASAF
programme are deregistered.
“District Commissioners and District
Development Directors must ensure that unqualified people listed under
TASAF programme are removed immediately” he stressed. The RC also
directed that TASAF employees who collude with the body registered
members, but are unqualified, are named and prosecuted.
A total of 68,915 households in 506
villages in the region were registered under TASAF. Households
registered under the agency normally enjoy free services ranging from
health to education for their children, besides enabling them to support
themselves with the routinely paid incomes
