TWELVE teachers, including the Director of Mount Pleasant Primary School of Tabata, were yesterday arraigned, charged with five counts relating to illegal stay in the country.
Before Kisutu Resident Magistrate
Godfrey Mwambapa, the Prosecutor with the Immigration Department, Gerald
Maridai named the accused as Anna Ochwo (accountant), Josephine Nelson,
Janeth Onzia, Upakmungu Nobert, Abitegeka Israel, Hajara Umavu,
Sibibuka Emmanuel and Stedia Chalikunda.
The rest are Evelyn Rikoba, Mkamwagi
Flavia , Byamugisha Fambe, Margaret Apophia (manager) and the director -
Julius Nelson. It was alleged that the accused, with the exception of
Nelson, were engaged into occupation without valid permit.
Reading the charges, Mr Maridai alleged
that on November 24, this year, at the Immigration Offices in Ilala
being citizens of Uganda, the accused were found assuming the roles of
teachers, manager and supervisor of the school without possessing
permits allowing them to do so.
It was alleged further that on the same
occasion, the accused being foreigners were found present in the country
without valid visas or any form of identification.
For Apophia, the prosecutor claimed that
on November 24, this year, at IIala Immigration offices, the accused
being a citizen of Uganda failed to meet requirements for obtaining a
visa before being engaged into any work.
As for the school director, he was
charged for illegally employing foreigners. Nelson being a citizen of
Tanzania, employed citizens of Uganda living in the country without
permits, which is contrary to the law.
The accused denied the charges and were
granted bail on conditions of availing one reliable surety who will sign
a bond of 3m/-, each. Among the 12 accused, seven of them fulfilled the
conditions for bail and were released.
The rest were remanded. Magistrate Mwambapa adjourned the case to December 12, this year, when it will come for another mention.
