Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has
been crowned Miss Universe, making her only the second South African to
ever win the crown
In a message to the Johannesburg-based Times Live news site after her victory, she said:
"South Africa, your support has
been absolutely incredible. Just know that we haven't had a Miss
Universe in 39 years, so this one is for you
I hope to make you proud and I hope
to be the physical representation of what a South African young woman
is. And I can't say thank you enough for all the support I've been
receiving."
Margaret Gardiner was the last South African to be crowned Miss Universe in 1978.
Miss Columbia was the first runner-up to Nel-Peters and Miss Jamica the second runner-up.
