President Paul Kagame, the RPF Inkotanyi flag-bearer in the ongoing presidential election, today morning cast his vote at APE-Rugunga polling station in Kigali City’s Nyarugenge District.
Kagame was accompanied by his family, including First Lady Jeannette Kagame and their four children.
All members of the First Family cast their vote.
Some 6.8 million citizens were expected to participate in the vote that started at 7am on Friday across the country.
This is the third democratic presidential election since the end of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
In the on-going poll, which started at 7 am and closes at 3 pm across the country, citizens will choose between Kagame and two other candidates—Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, and Philippe Mpayimana, an independent.
Kagame, who is the flag-bearer for the ruling RPF-Inkotanyi party and a coalition of eight political parties that endorsed him, has promised to further strengthen the country’s economy, boost social welfare, and good governance as well as justice.
Habineza’s proposed policies include tax cuts and land reforms while Mpayimana has pitched to strengthen democracy, promote trade and agriculture, foster more unity among Rwandans and empower the Rwandan youth, including those in the Diaspora.
