Singida East Member of Parliament Tundu Lissu
SINGIDA East Member of Parliament (MP) Tundu Lissu was yesterday arrested at Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court premises in Dar es Salaam over seditious related charges.
The Chief Whip of Opposition in parliament and Tanganyika Law Society President, Lissu fell on police hands immediately after attending a criminal case against Yeriko Nyerere.
The opposition legislator appeared in the case, defending the accused. After the court session, the MP on the opposition Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) jovially talked to his colleagues before he boarded his vehicle with registration number T261 DHH, ready to leave the premises But, as he moved towards the court premises’ main entrance, his car was blocked by a police vehicle, with registration number RX 04 EZN Land Cruiser, with two other vehicles, T475 BNM and TY 424 BZN, carrying heavily armed policemen coming behind the legislator’s vehicle.
After a brief conversation with the police, Lissu disembarked from his car and boarded the police car, which had blocked his. The convoy then left the court grounds speedily to the Central Police Station, where he was locked up.
Advocate Peter Kibatala, who has defended the legislator in a number of criminal cases also witnessed the arrest, confirming to the ‘Daily News’ that his client was taken to Central Police for questioning on an unspecified offence.
The arrest comes few days after Lissu claimed that the government-procured Bombardier Q 400 plane had been seized in Canada. He charged that the passenger plane, earlier scheduled for commissioning last month, had been held after the government failed to pay the Canadian Stirling Civil Engineering 38 million US dollars.
It is alleged that lawyers representing the company had attached the government property to press for payment of the debt. Lissu reportedly said the company won the tender to construct Wazo Hill-Bagamoyo Road, but the contract was terminated without paying compensation
