Pay-TV firm MultiChoice has increased the number of channels available on its DStv family package to lure more customers following increased competition from Internet TV.
DStv will offer the Spanish league La Liga on its Family Bouquet beside BBCLifestyle, Food Network, Cbeebies, Trace Mziki, Africa Magic Epic and Trace Mziki that were previously available on higher-priced bouquets.
“Last year, we froze subscription prices and added more content and more importantly, brought down the English Premier League to the DStv Compact packages,” said Eric Odipo, MultiChoice Kenya managing director, in a statement.
“And now we are further entrenching the notion DStv is about real value and the ‘Home of Football’ by bringing all Spanish La Liga games in HD down to the DStv Family package at no extra cost.”
The family package currently costs Sh1,900 while Access goes for Sh1,050, Compact for Sh3,550, Compact Plus for Sh5,425 and the Premium package for Sh8,180.
Kwese Sports signed a four-year deal with Union of European Football Association (Uefa) and Fifa, giving it broadcast rights for the Uefa national team football matches, 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 in Africa with an exception of South Africa, raising competition for sports viewership in Kenya a notch higher.
This coupled with the entry of subscription video-on-demand providers including Netflix and Showmax, MultiChoice and other Pay-TV providers have been forced to increase the number of channels and/or lower prices.
MultiChoice recently slashed decoder prices 22 per cent to Sh5,000 that covers cabling, satellite dish, installation and a one-month free viewing.
