To the surprise of many, the NGOs
Co-ordination Board has within two days sought to deregister two
prominent non-governmental organisations.
The Kenya
Human Rights Commission (KHRC), banned two days ago, has already come
out to...
defend itself against accusations of tax evasion, running illegal bank accounts and hiring foreigners without work permits.

KHRC chairman Makau Mutua has hit back with claims that the Fazul Mahamed-led board’s actions are politically motivated.
In light of these events, two issues need to be made clear.
In light of these events, two issues need to be made clear.
First,
the board must act only according to the law. It must not only condemn
people unheard, but must be ready to present evidence of the wrong it
accuses them of doing.
It must also be ready afford directors of these agencies an opportunity to defend their organisations before taking any action.
Secondly,
since Mr Mahamed began a purge on alleged errant NGOs in 2015, he has
himself been dogged by claims that he used a forged certificate to
clinch the top job – he needs to come clean on this if claims of fraud
against others are to hold any water in the court of public opinion.
