THERE has been increased need for national, referral and regional hospitals to test their medical equipment for calibration as they seek to be accredited by the Southern Africa Development Community Accreditation Services (SADCAS).
Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS)
Acting Head of Metrology Laboratory, Mr Joseph Kadenge said in Dar es
Salaam yesterday that the influx has been necessitated by the demand
that the hospitals need to be accredited and one of the items is
calibration.
He said that some of the equipment that
has been sent to the laboratory for calibration includes syringes,
thermometers, sample agent fridges, incubators, sterilizers, weight in
measures, auto-clave, and micropipettes among others.
“As TBS we usually conduct calibration
tests for medical equipment and we are accredited to do so. Previously,
we were getting very few, but of late, many hospitals come to our
laboratory to test their equipment for proper calibration,” he said.
He added that the influx is a good sign
that the hospitals understand the need to test their medical equipment
so that their services will not be questionable.
“It is for the good of the patient as
well, since, if the equipment does not bear the stated calibration, that
is, when you feel sick you go for checkup, and if the samples are
placed in wrongly calibrated equipment, then chances are, the results
will not be proper, thus at the end of the day, you won’t get the
required treatment,” he said.
