Dream big, but above all stay rooted to reality

All great things were once just dreams, but those who accomplished them didn’t do so without their basics met. PHOTO | FILE All great things were once just dreams, but those who accomplished them didn’t do so without their basics met. PHOTO | FILE
When looking to realise our dreams, it is important to be very realistic with regard to the resources that we have available.
By “resources,” I mainly mean time, money, know-how and know-who. If we are going to chase a myriad of dreams all at the same time, we have got to have all our resources lined up and ready to be deployed to all the ventures concurrently.
If, however, we are working with limited resources, we really have no option but to be extremely intelligent about how we deploy them.
Let us suppose that you have built a strong network across various industries over the years and know of various opportunities that you could strike gold on.
You happen to be out of work after many years in corporate employment so you boast a wealth of valuable experience, but currently have no source of income.
You have a paltry amount in savings so managing yourself is also a crucial matter that you need to take into consideration.
Dream big, I frequently urge and encourage you to have multiple sources of income.
That said, at this juncture, however marvelous your dreams are, it is not practical for you to expect that they are all going to materialise just because they sound achievable and the people you talk about them to cheer you on with empty words because they know you have the smarts.
These people also love you and do not want to risk hurting your feelings. The few who have been in your shoes or are simply wise enough to know that what you need is a little tough love will tell it to you like it is.
All great things were once just dreams, but those who accomplished them didn’t do so without their basics met.
Look, you cannot chase your dreams on an empty stomach. So we are clear, the basics are food, shelter and clothing.
If you are not in a position to consistently take care of those, your dreams are at risk of dying with you. Decided to tackle first things first however demeaning or embarrassing it may seem especially if you’ve told everyone that you’re going out on your own.
Open wide, take a large bite of humble pie and get a job to sustain yourself.
Don’t take too long to do this as you wait around hoping that one of your many business opportunities will come through in time before the landlord starts getting impatient.
You do not want to get into a desperate situation before finding a job to sustain yourself. If you do, you grind to the point where none of your friends answer calls from you.
They quickly snub any of your attempts to get together because you’re likely to bore them half to death with the projects you have in the pipeline before asking for a loan to be paid back when (if) you hit jackpot. You could get to the point where even your family members start avoiding you.
Even if you’re generally a popular person, your circles can really thin out when you are out of means.
I’m sure all your friends and family love you, but understand this; your dreams, however valid are yours, not theirs. Very few will go beyond verbal encouragement.
Your vision will never be as clear to them as it is to you until you actualize it.
You will no doubt find a few people willing to support you financially, but their patience soon wears out as your dreams take time to manifest.
They are not bad people and they probably genuinely care for you, but you need to be very aware of the fact that no one likes dependents.
