The Postal Corporation of Kenya,
commonly known as Posta, has launched a new set of postage stamps to
commemorate the standard gauge railway (SGR).
Postmaster
General and chief executive Dan Kagwe said the stamps are part of the
firm's tradition to capture Kenya’s changes and historical milestones in
rail transport.
“It is a historic thing. It signifies
the major infrastructural changes the government has undertaken. There
are people who break stamps, the philatelists who are going to enjoy
these stamps worldwide,” said Mr Kagwe during the unveiling at the
general post office in Mombasa.
The stamp bears the portrait of a smiling President Uhuru Kenyatta standing on the new railway line.
They will be sold from Sh35, Sh80, Sh150, Sh200 while the first issue will be sold at Sh400.
Sh200 million
The Postmaster General said the parastatal targets Sh200 million from the sale of the stamps in three months.
“This is our main line. Our business is to communicate
with the world. It is going to be beamed all over China to about 1.2
billion people. Buying of stamps in China will create big business,” he
insisted.
He said the stamps will be a reminder in the future of the moment Kenya inaugurated the mega infrastructure project.
“Every
year or whenever there are milestones we make stamps to remind people
about the changes undertaken for future reference. We did one during
promulgation of the new constitution,” he added.
