THE ongoing houses construction for public servants at Bunju in Kinondoni municipality, Dar es Salaam Region by the Tanzania Building Agency (TBA) has won hearts of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) members who recently inspected the project.
The committee members expressed
satisfaction on the project implementation and showered praise over the
TBA leadership as well as the government in general for supervising the
housing project. The parliamentary committee appealed to the public
servants to come in big numbers to buy the well constructed houses.
PAC Chairman, Mr Josephat Asunga,
addressing journalists after the inspection, said the project was of its
kind and will help public servants while still employed as well as
after retirement. “I ask public servants who had not applied for these
houses to do so now.
The houses would help public servants
even after retirement. This is a special opportunity to public servants
in the country especially in Dar es Salaam Region to acquire quality
houses which will help them in their life,” PAC Chairman said.
He asked TBA to reduce the costs to make
it affordable for the public servants in order that all public servants
benefit from the project. “The present cost of the houses is so bad,
but we advise you (TBA) to think of suitable measures that will help in
reducing the price cost.
We are aware of the public servants’
salaries,” said the chairman. TBA Chief Executive Officer, Elius
Mwakalinga said that the biggest challenge facing TBA projects
implementation is accessibility of water and electricity whose huge cost
has to be covered by his agency to enable the clients enjoy the
services within the areas.
“We asked Tanzania Electric Supply
Company (TANESCO) and Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Corporation
(DAWASCO) to foot to instal electric power and water to our project
areas instead of leaving the role to us (TBA),” he said.
He added that the cost is very higher,
saying support is needed from the responsible utility authorities in
order to achieve our goals and for the development of the nation. He
pointed out that the main aim of the project was to provide quality and
environmentally friendly accommodation to the public servants through
efficient and effective business.
