MEDIA Council of Tanzania (MCT) has urged journalists in the country to avoid taking side when covering stories, lest they undermine the profession.
Addressing journalists here on the
status of the profession and recent invasion of a media house in Dar es
Salaam last Friday, MCT Executive Secretary Kajubi Mukajanga, said there
have been unhealthy reporting in the recent months due to snubbing the
professional ethics.
“Let’s us stick to our profession and
never allow politicians to manipulate us. It’s unfortunate that some
journalists deliberately ignore professional ethics for personal gains,”
Mr Mukajanga said, condemning the ‘attack’ on media houses.
He said the newsroom invasion should
never be allowed because it’s illegal and tarnishes the country image,
which is globally respected for its political stability and respect to
press freedom. “It is sad that a senior government official is alleged
to have stormed into the media house for his personal interest.
We must all, in the strongest possible
terms, condemn the attack,” charged Mr Mukajanga. He appealed to all
journalists, regardless of their employers, human rights activists and
other stakeholders to unite against any “threat, suppression and
harassments of journalists and media freedom.
” Mr Mukajanga said nobody is above the
law and that in case of journalists or media violating the law, should
be held accountable procedurally.
“People should not be allowed to storm
newsrooms, intimidate and beat journalists just because they are leaders
with authority to command security agencies. All leaders must observe
the constitution and adhere to the laws, even when annoyed,” said Mr
Mukajanga.
