The university where embattled Mombasa
Governor Ali Hassan Joho studied for his second Bachelor’s Degree says
it admitted him on the strength of a degree awarded by a foreign
university and not the D- grade in the high school exam.
Gretsa
University Vice-Chancellor Kuria Thuo defended the decision to admit Mr
Joho to study for a Bachelor of Commerce degree, saying the previous
Bachelor of Business Administration degree awarded to him by Kampala
International University in Uganda had been recognised by the Commission
for University Education (CUE) as required by the Universities Act.
“However,
for now, Gretsa University does not deem it prudent to make further
comments on the matter as it is still under DCI probe,” said Prof Thuo.
The
D- certificate will shine the spotlight on the degree the governor got
from Gretsa University in Thika given that the minimum entry grade to
university remains C+.
The university is among three others that have sought
renewal of their Letter of Interim and which is still pending before
Education secretary Fred Matiang’i’s office.
The
examinations agency says the certificate claiming that Mr Joho attained a
C+ in 1992 was fake amid claims that the Mombasa governor gained entry
to the University of Nairobi, dropped studies and subsequently
transferred to Kampala International University using the forged
results. Spy agency NIS has linked Mr Joho to the forged certificate.
The governor however admits ownership of the D-grade and not the C+.
Yesterday, he was grilled for nearly two hours at Mombasa’s criminal investigations unit over the Form Four papers.
But Mr Joho exuded confidence that he would be cleared of the allegations that he claims are politically motivated.
