MINISTER of Works, Transport and Communications Professor Makame Mbarawa has said the fifth phase government has decided to ensure the creation and improvement of infrastructure in various parts of the country.
Speaking here yesterday at the opening
of the 27th continuing Professional development (CPD) seminar, Minister
Mbalawa said if the country needed to have industrial economy,
infrastructure should be built. Minister Mbarawa said the government
planned for the construction of a standard gauge railway which would
start in Dar-es-Salaam to Mwanza.
The construction would cost 1.2bn US
dollars. ‘’Our neighbours – Kenyans - are now on the construction of the
standard railway gauge from Mombasa to Nairobi. Ethiopians too are now
doing building a similar railway.
The electric train from Morogoro to
Dar-es-Salaam will be able to travel 160 kilometers per hour,’’ Mr.
Mbarawa said. Professor Mbarawa said the standard gauge railway project
wouldl demand 500 engineers from Architect and Quantity Surveyors
Registration Board(AQRB).
He added that the government still had
too many construction projects to carry out such the government’s move
to the nation’s capital of Dodoma and more government institution
required to be built. Professor Mbarawa disclosed that several
subcontractors were still required for the construction of flyovers in
Chang’ombe, Morroco, Uhasibu and Mwenge in Dar-es-Salaam city.
Minister Mbarawa further instructed that
contractors in the country should make sure they did their work
seriously . Acting Registrar of the AQRB Board Mr Albert Munuo said
until then their board had annulled the registration of 89 construction
companies for building substandard buildings.
