ZANZIBAR President Ali Mohamed Shein has wished residents here and Tanzanians in general a happy new year, appealing for them to strengthen the war against corruption and abuse of women and children.
“Wish you all the best in 2017 -- with a
hope of scoring high in economy, social and political development. But
we must fight the enemies– corruption and abuses first,” Dr Shein
stated.
The appeal was contained in his speeches
that he delivered to welcome 2017 at the National Body Exercise Day
held at the Amaan Stadium here. He said everyone should take anti
corruption and abuse of children--mainly rape -- as matters of serious
national concern.
“It is a pity that despite the awareness
about the consequences of abuse of children and women, the incidents
are still on the rise. We need concerted efforts to end these problems,”
he remarked.
0000000Dr Shein noted that statistics
from police show that reported cases of abuse increased from 169 in 2015
to 512, second week of December last year, equivalent to 203 per cent
increase.
Back to the physical fitness day, the
president said people should build the culture of having frequent body
exercises to prevent avoidable health complications, mainly non
communicable diseases.
After a four-kilometre early morning
walk (from Tumbaku Grounds to Amani Stadium) accompanied by other
leaders, including retired Union President Mzee Ali Hassan Mwinyi, and
the Isles Vice-President, Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi, Dr Shein emphasized
on body exercises, promising to construct more playgrounds so that the
people can easily access areas for the exercises.
