For a number of days now, such reports
have been circulating in the media to suggest that the government has
impounded the shipment with an intention to auction after the said owner
failed to pay required taxes.
It claimed further that President Magufuli had directed the withholding of the cargo until the so claimed taxes are paid.
“We would like to inform the general
public that such reports are false and fabricated; President John
Magufuli has never made any directive to withhold any consignment
belonging to Mama Kikwete,” the Directorate of Presidential
Communications said in a statement yesterday.
The statement, signed by the Director of
Presidential Communications, Mr Gerson Msigwa, said President Magufuli
was saddened by the rumours which intend to tarnish the image of former
President Jakaya Kikwete and his family.
“I have been disappointed by the false
reports against the retired president and his wife; I urge all those
behind the fabrication of the news to stop immediately and let Mr
Kikwete have a rest.
“Former President Kikwete has done a lot
in the service of this country; he has retired and should be left to
take a rest after his service,” Dr Magufuli was quoted as saying in the
statement.
President Magufuli went further and
warned against the trend of fabricating news for the purpose of
tarnishing the image of former leaders.
Mama Kikwete formed WAMA as a
non-government organisation meant to provide assistance and empower
women and girls in education, health and other related issues important
to their welfare.
During the Third Phase Government,
former First Lady Anna Mkapa formed the Equal Opportunity for All Trust
Fund (EOTF), which exists to date, to support communities.
