Govt thanks Norwegian for supporting private sector

THE Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Adelhelm Meru, has urged stakeholders to underline the importance of responsible businesses for industrialisation of Tanzania.

Dr Meru said his ministry under the fifth phase government is focused on building an industrialised and prosperous Tanzania, adding that responsible businesses are key contributors to that. He gave his opening remarks during the seminar entitled “The Business Case for Human Rights and Gender Approach.
" The one-day event was organised in collaboration with FOKUS Forum for Women Development and Business and Human Rights East Africa, with input from UN-Global Compact Tanzania, the Legal and Human Rights Centre and Norges Vel.
The participants include high level officials from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investments and the Norwegian Embassy and the key Norwegian companies in Tanzania and experts in Gender and Human Rights from Tanzania and Norway.
"It is expected that industrialisation and all associated local and foreign investments must be sustainable and sound business which also respects human rights, said Dr Meru, insisting that Tanzania welcomes collaboration with such responsible investors and is convinced that the Tanzanian economy must industrialise to improve and sustain economic growth.
He further said his ministry thanks Norway for its support to private sector development programmes within energy, taxation and many other areas. It also welcomes Norwegian companies and investors to do responsible business in Tanzania.
On her part, Norwegian Ambassador to Tanzania, Ms Hanne-Marie Kaastard, said Norway is putting gender on the business and Human Rights agenda and she is happy to see that Norwegian business engage with Tanzanian partners to put this into action.
"We encourage companies in Tanzania to integrate women's rights into business and human rights agenda and to the workplace," she said, adding that Norway and Tanzania has mutual interest in strengthening the private sector aspects of our long working relation and we are happy to work together to ensure responsible business and investments in Tanzania
