PRIME MINISTER Kassim Majaliwa yesterday instructed local authorities to embrace the concept of local content in all-prospective projects as a way to support local industries.
Local content requirements (LCRs) are
policy measures that typically require a certain percentage of
intermediate goods or skills to be sourced internally.
There’s a common discontent that the
local authorities have been executing the multi-billion dollars
projects, but import materials and services readily available locally,
denying locals their share of economic benefits.
Inaugurating the Lodhia Plastic Industry
in Arusha yesterday, the Premier directed all cities, municipal and
district councils to procure plastic pipelines locally whenever they
implement water projects.
“Our intention in the government is to
protect local industries through procuring their products,” said Premier
Majaliwa, adding that local authorities should provide business
opportunities for local investors.
Chairman of Lodhia Group of Industries,
Arun Lodhia asked the government to ensure contractors source the
products readily available locally, if the industrialisation plan is to
be realised. Lodhia Plastic Industries Managing Director, Sailesh
Pandit, told the premier that his factory faced difficulties in the
local market, thanks to a smear campaign prompted by crooked officials.
Apart from ISO certification, the pipes
of local plastic manufacturer have also been certified by Tanzania
Bureau of standards (TBS) and the ministry of water.
Lodhia Plastic Industries Ltd is a
manufacturing company dealing in premium quality plastic products using
the latest technology and equipment. Apart from employing 1,300
directly, the factory also pays nearly 20bn/- as revenue and other taxes
annually
