PRESIDENT John Magufuli yesterday swore in heads of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), judges of the Court of Appeal and head of ethics secretariat. The new officials were appointed by President Magufuli on December 22, this year.
They include NEC Chairman Judge
Semitoscles Kaijage, Judge (rtd) Hamid Mahmoud Hamid who has been sworn
in for the NEC deputy chairman post and Judge (rtd) Harold Nsekela who
has been sworn in to head the Ethics Secretariat.
Judge Kaijage has served at the Court of Appeal for four years.
He is taking the NEC reins from Judge
(rtd) Damian Lubuva who finished his fiveyear tenure on Monday. Judge
Lubuva assumed leadership of the electoral body on December 19, 2011.
Judge (rtd) Hamid Mahmoud Hamid was reappointed on Wednesday to continue
serving as NEC vice chairman for another five years.
His first five-year term with NEC came
to an end on Monday. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Kassim
Majaliwa, Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman, Attorney General George
Masaju and Minister of State in the President’s Office - Public Service
Management and Good Governance, Angela Kairuki. The three will head the
offices for a period of five years.
The judges of Court of Appeal who were
sworn in yesterday were Rehema Mkuye, Sivangilwa Mwangesi and Dr Gerald
Ndika and Jackobs Mwambegele. Meanwhile, President Magufuli met the
Turkish Ambassador to Tanzania, Ms Yesamin Eralp at the State House.
The two discussed various issues related
to diplomatic, social and economic relationships between the two
countries. In another development, President Magufuli and his wife,
Janeth, paid a visit to the Archbishop of Dar es Salaam, Polycarp
Cardinal Pengo.
The two visited him to extend their
condolences following the death of his sister, Efrazia Pengo who was
promoted to glory on December 22, this year in Mwanzye village,
Sumbawanga District. She was 79 years
