Arraignment of terror suspect attracts hundreds in Bukoba

HUNDREDS of Bukoba residents yesterday thronged the Kagera Resident Magistrate’s Court here as a Muleba resident was arraigned over attempts to join a terrorist group, Al-Shabaab, in Somalia.

Before Resident Magistrate Stanley Mwakihaba was 38-year old Haruna Issa alias Kazunguye, a resident of Ruhanga village in Kagera Region’s Muleba District.
Prosecuting, State Attorney Haruna Shomari told the court that on different dates this year, the accused prepared documents with the aim of joining the Al-Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia.
The accused, who was dressed in a white shirt, blue trousers and a long beard, looked unshaken as he firmly stood in the dock,sometimes casting a glance at the curious crowd. He denied the charge. Mr Shomari asked the court to allow him to make some amendments to the charge.
“Your honour, due to some technical reasons, I pray to make some amendments to the charge,” he pleaded. Magistrate Mwakihaba granted the prayer, ordering the accused to remain in custody until today morning when the case will come up for another mention.
Meanwhile, Stephano Florence (36), a resident of Kanyangereko village in Bukoba Rural District, appeared before the same court charged with abducting a girl aged below 16 years. Prosecuting, State Attorney Grey Uhagile told Magistrate Stanley Mwakihaba that the accused committed the offence on October 17, this year.
He alleged that the accused abducted the 13-year old girl (name withheld) , a Standard Two at Kabagara Primary School. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. Magistrate Mwakihaba adjourned the case and remanded the defendant until January 4, next year
