POLICE in Mbeya Region are holding 41 people for allegedly attacking the Makongorosi Police Station and attempting to abduct two murder suspects who were being held there.

Mbeya Regional Police Commander (RPC) Mr Dhahiri Kidavashari told the ‘Daily News’ over the phone yesterday that among the 41 people being held, 34 are men and 7 women.
According to him, the incident occurred on Sunday morning at around 11:45 when the mob attacked the police station, which is in Chunya District, and tried to abduct two people who were held by police, Erasto Robert (28) of Kilombero in Morogoro Region and Basi Linus (24), a resident of Makongorosi in Chunya.
The suspects are facing murder charges. They are suspected of killing one Jacob Brown alias Salama, who was found dead at his farm on December 11. The mob tried to abduct them with the intention of going to kill them in retaliation for the village deaths. “The mob used home-made weapons and stones to attack the police station.
They were also equipped with petrol for the purpose of burning the station. In the incident, eight people were injured, including four police officers and four civilians,” he said. He mentioned the injured police officers as G.4684D/C Deogratias, H.2361D/C Shaban, H.5314 PC Asheri and H.3650 PC Adam.
They were all rushed to Chunya District Hospital (CDH) and discharged after medical treatment. He mentioned the injured civilians as Dimita Mwangabula (24), Amosi Kandonga (16), Hawa Masumbuko (21) and Amoke Mbilinyi (25).
They were all rushed to CDH for medical treatment but Amoke Mbilinyi died shortly on arrival at the hospital. Accoding to Mr Kidavashari, the mob blocked the Chunya/Makongorosi Road by putting large stones and tree trunks, which inconvenienced other road users.
“Due to the situation, police used tear gas and blanks to demobilise the people, managing to arrest 41 rioters. Twenty of them will appear in court after investigations are completed,” the RPC reported, adding that the body of the deceased is preserved at the same hospital -- pending burial arrangements
