Vintage biplanes to fly in Tanzania next week

DAILY NEWS Reporter
TANZANIA’s tourist attractions are set for a big boost as the country will from next Monday play host to a leg of the first-ever and longest vintage air rally flying across Africa from Crete in Greece to Cape Town in South Africa.

The Vintage Air Rally involves old aircrafts of as old as 1920s and are operated by experienced pilots from various parts of the world which includes Germany, South Africa, United Kingdom, USA, Belgium and Russia.
The General Manager of the Puma Energy Tanzania, Mr Philippe Corsaletti, said the country’s tourism would benefit from the rally since a total of 22 aircrafts would land at some of the national parks for pilots and their assistances to spend some times touring the parks. Puma Energy Tanzania is part of the Puma Energy Group, the globally integrated midstream and downstream energy company, which is an official fuel sponsor for the 2016 Vintage Air Rally.
“The pilots will have a great time in our parks and other tourist centres in the country and this will help to promote national tourism in a global picture as people around the world are following them up at every place they camp,” he said.
Aviation Operations Manager of the Puma Energy Tanzania, Mr Raymond Tungaraza, said the Vintage Air Rally, which will have a total of 50 people including pilots and their assistants aboard, will land in Tanzania at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) next Monday arriving from Wilson Airport in Nairobi.
He noted that the aircrafts would then fly to Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Dodoma and Songwe in Mbeya before leaving the country to Zambia on December 2.
Aviation Sales Manager of the company, Mr Andrew Lauwo, said the decision by the company was in line with supporting government’s efforts in promoting the country’s tourism.
The aircrafts use Avgas fuel only and Puma Energy is the only supplier of such fuel in the country.
