ACTIVISTS, through the Tanzania Constitution Forum (TCF), have called upon the government to finalise the new constitution-making process for the country to get the new document.
TCF Chairman, Mr Deus Kibamba, said in
Dar es Salaam yesterday that the new constitution would iron out
shortcomings in the current fundamental principles, pointing out it
should address gender inequality.
“We’re planning to meet Members of
Parliament (MPs) in January, next year, to discuss on the new
constitution,” said the TCF chairperson in a statement read on his
behalf by Ms Mpendwa Chihimba, representing Women Fighting AIDS in
Tanzania (WOFATA).
WOFATA is among the 184 civil societies
forming TCF, which is under the leadership of a National Steering
Committee (NSC), with the aim to provide platform for Tanzanians to
participate in the implementation of the new constitution making
process. Mr Kibamba hailed a number of initiatives carried out by the
Fifth Phase Government under President John Magufuli, saying the
initiatives have facilitated to restore integrity among the civil
servants.
But he said the new law would
tremendously facilitate the initiatives implemented by the fifth phase
government, saying the government can finalise the constitution making
process without pressure.
“The new constitution will make
President Magufuli to leave behind a legacy to Tanzanians after his term
in office ends,” he observed. Mr Kibamba further noted that TCF and the
Policy Forum would soon launch guideline on the ‘New Direction’ to
attain the new constitution signalling to embark on a second phase of
the constitutionmaking process.
“The guideline is aimed to raise
awareness to the people as well as to mobilise them and policy makers on
a second phase of the process,” he said. Mr Kibamba added that the
constitution was an ideal guideline for any government to run its
activities efficiently.
