THE fifth cashew nuts auctions will take place today after being postponed last Sunday following transporters’ strike over low payment.
Nachingwea District Commissioner (DC),
Ms Rukia Muwango, said after meeting both parties that the auction will
be held today, allaying fears to farmers over failure to sell their
cashew nuts.
“The misunderstanding between
transporters and cooperative societies on transport fees is resolved and
consignment of cashew nuts are being ferried from the cooperatives
warehouses to special warehouses where auctions take place,” she said.
She said some transporters were
overcharging farmers particularly at this period of time where prices
for cashew nuts have shot up to about 4,000/ - per kilogramme. She added
that the government’s intention is to make sure farmers accrue benefits
from cashew nuts in order to improve their living standards.
Since 2016/ 17 when cashew nuts season
started, four auctions have been conducted in Lindi and Mtwara regions
with 10,170,438 kilogrammes sold.
On his part, RUNALI Cooperatives Society
Manager, Mr Christopher Mwaya, said the auction that was scheduled last
Sunday failed to take place following transporters’ strike over low
pay.
“Transporters strike started November 9th where the cooperative societies expected to ferry 99,745,000 kilogrammes,” he said.
