PRESIDENT Ali Mohamed Shein yesterday made an impromptu visit to the Zanzibar International Airport, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the development of the fire building at the airport.
He said that the prolonged unfinished
house for the firefighters tarnishes the image of the airport, which is
being developed to become one of the modern airports in the region.
“I hereby direct the Ministry of
Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport, and the Ministry of
State- Regional Administration and Special Department to work closely in
ensuring that the building is complete within the next two months,” he
said.
The minister reiterated the government’s
plans of ensuring that the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport
(AAKIA) is improved to attract more flight operators, and become
convenient for travellers including tourists.
The airport is an entry point for most
tourists entering Zanzibar, and the government with support from the
World Bank, and the Exim-China Bank has been expanding it and improving
its infrastructure, security and services to meet international
standards.
During his visit, Dr Shein also spared
some time to visit the housing construction site being developed by the
Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF) at Mbweni area, which aims to
accommodate middle and high income earners.
Dr Shein commended ZSSF for the project
and being creative in expanding its income sources. However, he asked
the social security to find ways on how majority low income citizens can
also benefit.
