Nutritionists charged with eliminating malnutrition

MAUREEN ODUNGA
JOINT efforts between the government and members of the public have been called upon in the fight against chronic malnutrition in the country.

An official at the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (Health), Dr Anna Nswila, made the call on behalf of the Deputy PS in the Ministry, Dr Zainab Chaula, during the climax of the National Multi-sectoral Nutrition Review workshop in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
“It’s thus the role of every individual to fight against all forms of malnutrition in the country,” said Dr Nswila.
She urged nutritionists to employ the existing structures such as public meetings being held by Local Government Authorities (LGAs) to create awareness on proper nutrition.
“Majority of the people in big cities consume food that is prepared by various food vendors found on our streets. Start by imparting knowledge to these people on the best nutrition practices,” she noted.
She said all nutritionists should have in place accurate data and statistics of under-five children in their areas in order to access funds from allocated health basket fund.
Through accurate data and statistics, the government will also be able to know whether the National Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Action Plan was being implemented as per set targets.
“All nutritionists should prepare their own routine reports and have in place workable targets in the implementation of their work,” she stressed.
On her part, the Managing Director of the Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC), Dr Joyceline Kaganda, was of the view that nutritionists employ opportunities by the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) programmes in the fight against malnutrition.
“We as nutritionists should not rely on only what is planned in our day to day activities, but rather be creative and come up with new dimensions that will offer results in our areas,” charged Dr Kaganda.
She pointed out that teamwork is vital in the attainment of big results in overcoming malnutrition in the country. Among recommendations of the meeting included developing resource mobilisation for the National Nutrition Action Plan
