A TANZANIAN, Mr Henry Clemens has been awarded by the South Korean President, Park Geun-hye for his tireless efforts to bring development in Tanzania by implementing ‘Saemaul Undong system.’
Mr Clemens, who is a former District
Commissioner for Mkuranga District in Coast Region and currently the
Chairman of SMU Tanzania, has been at the forefront to implement the
system in Tanzania for some years now.
The Saemaul Undong, also known as the
New Community Movement, New Village Movement, Saemaul Movement or
Saema’eul Movement, was a political initiative launched in 1970 by South
Korean President Park Chung-hee to modernise the rural South Korean
economy that aims at sharing knowledge on communitydriven development
(CDD) as practised in China, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Saemaul Undong system is reputed to have
contributed considerably to the achievements of South Korea’s rural’
development. It emphasises on the cooperation and unity among citizens
who plan, strategise and implement their development agendas.
“There has been a notable change in
development because of this system in areas where it is implemented,” he
said over the weekend. The system is being implemented in two villages
of Mfuru Mwambao and Njia nne in Mkuranga District.
According to Mr Clemens, production of
crops such as cassava, papaya and coconuts have considerably increased
in the district, thanks to the system. “It is better if the system were
to be implemented in other districts in our country,” he said.
In his tour at Njia Nne village over the
weekend, a South Korean Ambassador in Tanzania, Mr Song Geum- Young
hailed the villagers for what they have achieved so far due to the
system.
“I have noted infrastructure challenges
facing you,” he said and explained that his government was committed to
involve itself in the infrastructure construction to bring more
development.
