THE Vice- President of the Council of State of Cuba, Mr Salvador Mesa, is expected to arrive in the country today for a threeday official visit. The tour is designed to strengthen and boost relations between the two countries.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and East
African cooperation, Dr Augustine Mahiga, told reporters in Dar es
Salaam yesterday that the aim of the visit is to further deepen the ties
and enhance mutual cooperation and understanding on major issues of
common interest.
He further said that Mr Mesa and his
delegates will hold talks with Tanzanian Vice- Presidentk, Ms Samia
Suluhu Hassan, before meeting President John Magufuli. During his visit,
Mr Mesa will also meet with Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Job
Ndugai and receive a message from Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). Mr Mesa
will depart on October 3 for Zanzibar to continue with his tour in which
he will hold talks with President Ali Mohamed Shein.
Dr Mahiga said Tanzanians cherish the
bonds of fraternity with their Cuban counterparts and are forever
grateful for the assistance by the revolutionary Cuban government in the
sectors of education, health and agriculture, among others.
In the health sector the two countries
have been supporting each other for a long time in which to date there
are 30 Cuban medical doctors working in various hospitals in Tanzania
Mainland and Zanzibar.
The Cuban doctors also help train local
health personnel and the medical students. The country has remained
committed to supporting Tanzania achieve its goal of having better
health services.
Cuba has also supported Tanzania in
combatting Malaria and the construction of antimalaria factory in Coast
Region, a unique institution in Africa that would produce biotech
products to eliminate mosquito larvae.
The construction of the factory is under
the supervision of the National Development Corporation (NDC). The
plant will speed up the fight against malaria by 90 per cent.
