Standard Seven exams: ‘Evil spirits’ frustrate candidates

DAILY NEWS Reporter
THE National Examination Council of Tanzania (NECTA) said the national Standard Seven examinations held on Wednesday and Thursday were conducted well despite a few shortcomings that will be dealt with in conformity with the rules that govern the council.

NECTA Executive Secretary, Dr Charles Msonde, told the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ yesterday that for the first time in examinations history, Mogohiwa School pupils in Gairo Municipality failed to sit for their science examination after they were allegedly attacked by evil spirits.
He said that following the incident, which he described as peculiar, the pupils called worshippers and village elders for intervention but the examination time was over.
They were not back in their senses thus did not do the science subject. However, he said, on the second day all was well.
The pupils did the rest of the examinations as planned. “Due to such a situation, the pupils will be graded according to the standing rules which says they should be awarded as per the subjects they seated for during their exams” said Dr Msonde.
Dr Msonde said there were a few cases of cheating but the clear data as to the number of those involved will be known after reports have been compiled.
On the penalties to be taken against the examination regulations defaulters, he said, the reports will be submitted to the board for proof and verification before endorsing the penalties.
Dr Msonde paid special tribute to regional and district administrative secretaries for the job well done to ensure that the examinations were conducted as required.
He said that 795,761 candidates were expected to seat for the examinations but the full number of those who entered the examination rooms will be known after the full report is compiled.
He further said that 765,097 candidates were expected to write the examinations in Kiswahili while 30,664 were to have their exams in English
