Samsung Electronics East Africa has stopped pre-orders of the Galaxy Note 7 in Kenya following a recall issued on the device globally.
Samsung recalled its new smartphone last week following reports of several devices exploding while charging.
“Locally, for customers who have already pre-ordered the Galaxy Note7 devices, we are assuring them that they will get quality assured products in the shortest time possible. In the meantime, we are temporarily holding further pre-orders as we await new delivery timelines” said Jung Hyun Park, vice president and managing director Samsung Electronics East Africa, in a statement.
The company said as of September 1, there were 35 reported cases globally of the smartphone catching fire. The device maker halted sales and recalled all Galaxy Note7 in the market stating it would replace all the handset.
Quality products
“We acknowledge the inconvenience this may cause in the market but this is to ensure that Samsung continues to deliver the highest quality products to our customers.
“We are working closely with our partners to ensure the replacement experience is as convenient and efficient as possible,” said Mr Park.
The Galaxy Note 7, launched last month globally but yet to be available in Kenya, is the latest flagship device by the electronics giant. The recall is seen as a setback to the premium phone maker, which has seen increased competition from LG, Huawei and Apple.
The older players in the smartphone field have pushed towards mid and high end devices following the increased competition in the low-end market.
Chinese brands have in recent years firmed their presence in the local market with low-cost, medium and high-end smartphones, providing consumers with a wide range of Internet-enabled devices.
