- NIDA, Home Affairs Ministry to embark on a two-week verification exercise
- It is a special measure to get rid of ghost workers and control wages
THE government has announced verification and identification of all civil servants starting October 3.
It will effective that date embark on a
two-week vital registration across the country for a centralised data of
all public servants, the Minister of State in the President’s Office,
Public Service Management and Good Governance, Ms Angela Kairuki, has
announced.
Addressing a news conference in Dar es
Salaam yesterday, Ms Kairuki said the exercise will cater for employees
in public institutions, parastatals, agencies, local authorities,
government departments, regional authorities, ministries and all
utilities that fall under the government.
According to the minister, the country
is estimated to have more than 561,000 public servants as she cautioned
that stern measures will be taken against employees who will not submit
the needed documents within the two week’s time.
Ms Kairuki said during the exercise in
which the government intends to get rid of ghost workers and control
public wages, public servants would be required to present their
original academic, professional and birth certificates, staff
identification card, voter registration cards, salary slip and passport.
The minister said the registration will
be carried jointly by the Ministry of Home Affairs through the National
Identification Authority (NIDA), her ministry and one person who will be
picked from each institution to join the team in the implementation of
the exercise.
“The exercise would be conducted in
public servants’ respective offices – and for that matter, all
government entities concerned are required to get involved to achieve
the mission,” she appealed.
Ms Kairuki said the managements of the
respective offices should immediately communicate with NIDA and prepare a
useful schedule that would enable all the public servants are
registered without disrupting implementation of other duties.
The organisations are required to get
prepared and acquire correct information of all the civil servants
working in their offices and appoint a civil servant administrative who
will team up with the task force from NIDA and the responsible ministry
towards implementing the exercise.
The executives are also required to put
aside an office to help facilitate the implementation of the exercise.
“The offices should be well equipped with required facilities, including
reliable electricity and appoint drivers and vehicles that would be
used by the task force,” she stated.
She reiterated the need for the
management of all the entities (government) to ensure all the public
servants participate as planned.
On the part of national identification,
the minister said that public servants with the initial National IDs are
required to carry the cards with them for verification during the
registration to go in line with the issuance of new IDs.
Acting NIDA Director of Information and
Communication Technology, Mr Mohammed Hamis, said the authority will
issue new IDs to all public servants across the country with no initial
ones.
“The initial ones would only be verified
as we provide the new ones to those public servants who did not acquire
the initial IDs,” he added.
NIDA currently has a total of 487
offices in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. According to Mr Hamis, the
authority’s offices are equipped with all the requirements meant to
facilitate the issuance of IDs countrywide
