NINE children have died in two separate incidents yesterday with 79 others, including one child, sustaining serious injuries in Kigoma and Sumbawanga regions.
Seven of the nine children, aged between
two and eight years old, died on Sunday as one was left in a critical
condition when a house they were sleeping in was burnt in Kigoma Region.
Kigoma Regional Commissioner Mr Emmanuel
Maganga said investigations into the fire will be conducted, stressing
that anyone who was involved will face the wrath of the law.
"This is a very sad incident, most so
because the children were in the house alone, sleeping," Mr Maganga, who
was in the company of members of the Kigoma Regional and District
Defence and Security Committee noted.
The Kigoma RC visited and witnessed
remains of the house that was gutted, saying that the government will
investigate to establish the cause. "We will investigate to establish
whether there was someone's hand in it.
Police will conduct the investigation
and if it comes to light that someone was involved, the law will take
its course," he stressed, calling on anyone with information that will
help in the investigation to present it to the police.
A Senior Medical Officer at Nguruka
Health Centre in Uvinza District, Dr Stanford Mchamgeni, said the
medical team tried to save the children's lives but in vain due to the
grievous injuries they had sustained.
"We rushed two of the seven children to
the wards to save their lives; they had severe burns to the extent of
losing consciousness. They died despite our efforts to save their
lives," Dr Mchamgeni explained.
In Sumbawanga, two toddlers aged between
three and four months, died on the spot while 78 other passengers were
left in a critical condition after a bus they were travelling in veered
off the road and overturned at Kanono Hill along Mpanda-Inyonga Highway
in Katavi Region.
According to the Katavi Regional Police
Commander, Mr Damas Nyanda, the passenger bus, with registration numbers
T258, belonging to a businessman in Mwanza, Boaz Kemoi, was being
driven by John Sadoki (34).
Mr Nyana said the accident took place at
around 8pm on Sunday and was caused by a malfunctioning brake system.
The dead have been identified as Kwilingwa Masolwa, aged three months,
from Mwamapuli Village in Mpanda District and Mahube Bragumu, aged four
months, from Igunga District in Tabora Region.
“Among the 78 wounded passengers, 67
were treated at Inyonga Hospital in Mlele District in the region and
discharged while 11 others, four of them women, have been admitted, with
their conditions described as critical.
The RPC said no arrest has been made as the driver is still at large.
