Samia pledges support to boost agriculture

THE government has promised to continue implementing various strategies for improving agriculture, fishing and livestock sectors so that Tanzanian entrepreneurs could compete in the international market.
According to the Vice-President, Mr Samia Suluhu Hassan, whose speech, which was read on her behalf by the Minister for Energy and Minerals, Prof Sospeter Muhongo, the government is embarking on implementing various strategies, which will enable Tanzanians to excel in the international market.
Prof Muhongo represented Ms Samia in the opening of the Nanenane Exhibitions at the Ngongo Grounds in Lindi Municipality. The vice-president said agriculture, fishing and livestock keeping were the backbone of the economy and that the government is doing everything in its power to boost the three sectors.
She told her audience that the government is setting up plans to ensure farmers, livestock keepers and fishermen are conducting their activities in a modern way. “We are setting strategies that will ensure modern farming, fishing and profitable animal keeping,” she reported.
She noted that agriculture contributes 29 per cent to GDP while it was 100 per cent source of food in the country.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has directed the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries development to scout for new modern technology that will push the country to untap deep fishing potentials.
Mr Majaliwa said the ministry must work around the clock to help the industry use new technologies including ships in neting-deep water fish.
Opening the 23rd week long agricultural exhibition held at the Mwalimu J. K Nyerere Grounds in Morogoro yesterday, Mr Majaliwa said the country has not benefitted from its fishing sector.
Under the new directives, the councils will need to empower youth groups to form fishing projects using new technologies “All responsible authorities should help the groups to access loans to improve their activities,” he directed
