Political situation not worrisome - Registrar

DAILY NEWS Reporter
THE Registrar of Political Parties Judge Francis Mutungi has allayed fears on possible altercations due to the current political situation caused by a defiant move by Chadema to conduct demonstrations banned by the government.

Judge Mutungi was confident that the political stalemate will be solved amicably through discussions, assuring the general public that his office will address the situation. In his capacity as custodian of registered parties, Judge Mutungi cautioned political parties against taking part in demonstrations and instead engage in negotiations to reach a consensus.
The Registrar revealed at a news conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the Tanzania Centre for Democracy (TCD) will convene a meeting next week to engage political parties on amicable solutions.
“The two-day meeting will be preceded by the Steering Committee of TCD which will set out how the negotiations will be conducted,” he explained. Judge Mutungi said the meeting has been slated for August 29 and 30, this year, in which delegates will have an opportunity to discuss the political situation in the country and the way forward. “All registered political parties have been invited at the meeting with the view of sharing and solving issues of contention,” he explained.
The Registrar said he will as well use the opportunity to address various issues, including the ban of political rallies by parties. “I am confident that all parties, being members of the TCD, will participate in the meeting,” he stated.
Asked to comment on internal wrangles within opposition party Civic United Front (CUF), Judge Mutungi said he will do so at the right time.
