TTCL to undergo huge management overhaul

THE state owned telecom operator - Tanzania Telecommunicat ions Company Limited (TTCL) is set to undergo huge structural, technical and management overhaul to strengthen its market position in the region.

TTCL Board Chairman, Prof Tolly Mbwete, said on Friday shortly after the firm was announced winner of the 40th Dar es Salaam Trade Fair on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) category. Prof Mbwete said the new reforms would be proposed to the government later this year for approval.
“We want to improve our service delivery across the country, but structural, technical and management transformation cannot be underestimated,” he said. Recalling; “It is just recently the government retained its shares from Airtel, this also necessitates reforms.”
He further observed the legislation -Tanzania Telecommunications Act, 1993 which institutes the establishment of the oldest and largest fixed line telecommunications company was outdated.
“We want the government to make amendments in the legislation to allow the firm become more competitive in the local and international market,” Mr Mbwete said at the trade fair.
According to the chairman, the telecom operator had made some formal recommendation to be submitted later to the government for review. But, the TTCL Chairman warned the plan under review would be a white elephant should the government fail to invest accordingly in technology and structural change of the firm.
