Over 1,580 lives lost in road carnage

ROAD accidents in Tanzania have claimed 1,580 lives between January and June this year, whereas 4,459 injuries were reported from 5,152 accidents countrywide, the Chief Traffic Police Commander Mohammed Mpinga revealed yesterday.

“During the period, some 1,279 men and 301 women, respectively lost their lives,” Commander Mpinga said in Dar es Salaam yesterday during the launch of a road safety campaign conducted by the Tanzania Media Women Association (TAMWA).
The traffic police boss explained further that out of those injured in road accidents, 1,257 were men and 3,402 were women respectively, calling on concerted efforts among stakeholders to address the situation.
“Mbeya Region recorded the highest number of women killed in road accidents, where 49 lost their lives while Ilala Municipality registered the highest number of women injured at 1,257,” he explained.
On the other hand, Commander Mpinga said roads accidents caused by motorcycles, commonly known as bodabodas were 1,356 during the period under review.
He hailed TAMWA for initiating the road safety campaign, expressing optimism that the initiative will boost government efforts in reducing road accidents.
“I understand other organizations such as Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA), Tanzania Media Fund (TMF) and Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) have same initiatives and should be emulated,” he noted.
