HUNDREDS of Arusha residents as well as other well-wishers from across the nation gathered in Arusha yesterday to pay last respects to the former National and East African Legislator, the late Beatrice Shelukindo who died here aged 58.
A multitude of people thronged to Ms Shelukindo’s family home in Olorien section in the outskirts of Arusha city where the late parliamentarian was laid to rest. The burial mass was conducted at the Diocese of Kilimanjaro’s Anglican Cathedral in Arusha, presided by the retired Bishop Simon Makundi.
“We have gathered here to pay last respects to a person who not only served within the nation but as far as across East Africa, it was a life well lived and Beatrice dies with respect after accomplishing her earthly mission,” stated Bishop Makundi and encouraged others to emulate the late legislator’s example.
The late Shelukindo, served at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in the first assembly from November 2001 to October 2005. She resigned from the assembly upon contesting and winning the Parliamentary seat in Kilindi Constituency, Tanga Region on the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) ticket, serving in the 9th and 10th Parliament.
She, however, did not contest in the October 2015 polls. As at time of death, the late Shelukindo was a member of the ruling party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) in Kilindi District. EALA Speaker, Mr Daniel Fred Kidega, in a statement released from Nairobi, eulogized the fallen legislator as a great debater.
