ZANTEL, a leading telecom operator in Zanzibar, has invested 10 million US Dollars for its network modernization, 4G LTE expansion, as well as network capacity and quality improvements.
The network modernization will involve
complete overhaul of the system by replacing current network equipment
with brand new ones. This will significantly improve customer
experience.
Speaking with business journalists here
over the weekend, Zantel Chief Executive Officer, Benoit Janin said that
the improvement of the quality of service for voice and internet in
Zanzibar was the priority number one for the company. ‘
‘Zantel has now embarked into a complete
new journey, with the aim of reinforcing our leadership position and
the innovation spirit in the islands,’’ said Mr Janin. He noted that
Zantel has already started to yield positive results from its network
optimization initiatives in most locations in Zanzibar.
The 3G Internet congestion has been
reduced thanks to the increase of the sites capacity whereas the quality
of voice calls has improved due to replacement of network equipment Mr
Janin highlighted that these improvements had been obtained in both
Unguja and Pemba, with a 3G service now fully efficient in Pemba.
Coverage issues in the islands have been
progressively addressed, with noticeable improvement of the indoor
coverage in various public places.
Mr Janin also explained that following
the launch of 4G services in Zanzibar last month, Zantel has also
expanded its network in the mainland by covering 80 per cent of Tanzania
mainland population from barely 40 per cent it was reaching before.
“Zantel’s network modernization will be
completed by end of September and would bring to all Zantel’s customer
the best voice and Internet experience”, said Mr Janin. An extension of
4G coverage in the Islands will also take place during this period.
Zantel also plans to upgrade the
Ezy-pesa service by investing in a new platform, developing the cross
network money transfers and improving the availability of the service
via a broader network of agents.
