THE Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Mr Mwigulu Nchemba, has said that the government is not planning to offer its land to members of the public for agricultural purposes, but will use it to empower the youth.
Mr Nchemba, who was responding to a
basic question from Mr Pascal Haonga (Mbozi -Chadema), said the
government will encourage the youth to form groups that will then be
empowered to use the land for agriculture.
The minister said he would direct
experts from his ministry to evaluate the land taken back from members
of the public, so it can be availed to the youth to provide employment
through agriculture. Mr Haonga had wanted the government to give back
land retaken from some members of the public, which is sitting idle
because NAFCO has been unable to put the land in good use.
The minister said the land cannot be
given back to the public but will be used to empower the youth in the
country, most of whom do not have employment.
Responding to the same question earlier,
the deputy minister in the ministry, Mr William Ole Nasha, said the
government cannot give back the land to Mbozi people, because there is
more requirements for it, noting that one of the pieces of land will be
used to produce high quality seeds to address shortages in the country.
He added that the government’s aim was
to reduce lack of high quality seeds in Mbozi District, adding that the
Agricultural Seed Agency (ASA) has established a farm input shop to
enable the public in the district access quality seeds and other farm
inputs
