JAPAN Tobacco International (JTI) Leaf Tanzania has donated two teachers’ blocks and refurbished two classrooms at Migungumalo primary school in Tabora’s Uyui District.
Tabora Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr
Aggrey Mwanri, appreciated the over 100m/- support, commending the firm
for its efforts to improve learning environment in the region.
“The support from JTI Leaf Tanzania is
laudable because provision of quality housing to teachers is critical to
create a motivated workforce in the education sector,” said the
regional chief at the handing over ceremony in the district.
Mr Mwanri described quality education as
a basic human right and essential tool for citizens to break the
poverty cycle and build the human capital.
JTI Senior Vice-President for Global
Leaf Paul Neumann said construction of the teachers’ houses is part of
the firm’s support programmes that focuses on supporting tobacco farmers
and their communities to address the local needs of the communities.
“We want to enrich people’s lives in
these communities by improving access to quality education by doing
exactly what we have done now in Migungumalo,” he promised. Mr Neumann
promised provision of clean and safe water to ‘wananchi’, saying:
“We understand water related problems to
which Tabora residents are subjected, especially during dry season. In
2015 we invested in drilling boreholes, some as deep as 140m to ensure
the residents access to clean and guaranteed water throughout the year.”
