AS of March 31, this year, the government has recovered a total of 93.9bn/- out of 256.2bn/- granted to university students through the Higher Learning Students Board (HESLB). And since its inception in 1994/94 the government has so far issued 2.44trl/- to 378,504 higher learning students.
The remarks were made by the Deputy
Minister for Education, Science, Technology and Vocational Training, Eng
Stella Manyanya when responding to a basic question from Mr Makame
Mashaka Foum (Kijini – CCM).
Mr Mashaka Foum wanted to know the
amount of money issued to higher learning students as loans since
inception to 2015/16 financial year and how much has been returned by
the students and the higher learning institution whose students are
leading in receiving more money.
Responding to the question, Eng Manyanya
said in 2014/15 the leading university with students receiving more
HESLB loans is the University of Dodoma, which also has more students
than any other university in the country.
The deputy minister commended all
students who have started paying back the HELSB loans, urging those that
have not started paying to do so immediately so other students can
benefit from the loans.
Eng Manyanya was responding to a
supplementary question from the same minister who wanted know the
government’s plans to provide reports to students making the repayments
on the amount remaining.
She noted that the whole system for
recovering the loans had challenges from the beginning, noting that
instead of showing that the recipient would be deducted 8 per cent of
his or her salary, it showed 8/-
